‘Well-being: the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy’

At times there can feel pressure to be ‘well’ and to spend time on nurturing and nourishing ourselves so we are fit enough for all that we commit to. In order to feel our best it would be wise to understand what wellness means to us otherwise, how do we know what we are trying to achieve?

For me, well-being is about feeling fulfilled. It’s about my batteries feeling recharged and my cup being full. It’s alone time before it’s time with others. It’s stillness before it’s get up and go. It’s nurturing my body so my mind has the chance to be the best it can be.

There is no right or wrong but understanding what actions help your own well-being will allow you to achieve it on a daily basis. Here is my personal list of things that make me ‘well’

  • Drinking water and staying hydrated. Herbal teas give me so much joy I am a big believer that most problems can be solved by sitting down away from the noise and having a cup of tea, the comfort gives clarity.
  • Conscious eating habits, that doesn’t mean everything I eat is healthy but it means I am conscious and mindful of what I am eating.
  • Exercising, jogging, walking just getting my body to move. Using the stairs instead of the lift, going for a walk around the block. Any movement is better than no movement. Celebrating the body and what it can do. What sport do you enjoy? Explore your options.
  • Getting out in nature, plants improve your oxygen levels which helps with productivity and I love anything green in the house. ‘Don’t wait for someone to bring you flowers. Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul.’
  • Journaling, one of the biggest outlets for me that gives me freedom to express, there are no rules!
  • Cultivating an attitude of gratitude. Not always easy in a society committed to scarcity. I set daily reminders in my outlook calendar to write down 3 things I am grateful for and I try to be as creative as possible.
  • Meditation and stillness. I use the calm app, I have a cushion and I give myself permission, space and time to be still.
  • Reading a book, growing my mind, learning new words.
  • Listening to a podcast/music. Allowing my imagination to have time to explore.
  • Relaxing with a hot bath, I would struggle to get through winters without baths. I allow the water to cleanse my spirit, it always makes me feel refreshed.
  • Essential oils, the smell instantly calms me. I have a ‘mindfulness pouch’ that I take with me everywhere and it has various essential oils to keep me grounded.
  • Lastly, I am kind to myself. I listen out for negative self talk, doubts and criticism and I call it out. It will always find a way to creep back in but I keep reminding myself to be kind to me. I am learning and forever growing, this is a journey – not a perfect one but a very honest one.

Cultivating a life of well-being takes time, it’s a journey and it takes patience to understand what is true to you. To help with the process ask yourself these questions.

  1. Do we need to set intentions every January in order to live the life we want to live? Or is the question: How serious are we about our life? Intuitively we know what is good for us, to live this one and precious life well and purposefully.
